Many items that can be knitted can also be crocheted.

CROCHET FELTED

Two Old Bags is the name of the alliance between Ann Swanson and Katie Nagorney, who design knitting patterns for many things, including purses such as the Lucy Bag. The Lucy Bag is knitted and then felted, a method that renders the fabric uniform and durable. When completed, it looks like a tote bag but with the shorter handle looping over the other to close the bag. Thus, the Lucy Bag is held by the long strap. Since some people prefer crocheting to knitting for its simplicity and speed, it is fortunate that The Lucy Bag can be crocheted, too.

Things You will Need

2-4 skeins 100 percent non-super-wash wool yarn, any color

Crochet hook (size I)

Scissors

Pillowcase

5 safety pins Suggest Edits The Bag

Familiarize yourself with crocheting basics. For this pattern, it is essential to understand how to start a crochet, chain and double crochet stitches and how to crochet a circle by increasing stitches. (See the tutorial in Resources.)

Double crochet a circle until it is as large as you want the base of the bag to be. The larger the diameter, the larger the bag will be.

Stop increasing and continue to crochet around the circle. The sides of the bag will begin to form. Crochet in this fashion until the bag is one-third longer than you want it to be when you are finished.

Completing the Bag

Pick up 10 to 15 stitches on the top of the bag and double crochet a 10-inch-long rectangle. Attach the free end to the bag 3 inches from the handle's base.

Imagine that the top of the bag is a circular clock face and that the ends of the handle you just made are at 11 and 1 o'clock. Pick up the same number of stitches -- 10 to 15 -- at 5 o'clock on the bag and sew a 40-inch rectangle. Attach the end of this rectangle at 7 o'clock on the bag.

Place the bag in a pillowcase and fasten it shut with safety pins. Wash it in a top-loading washing machine on the highest heat and highest agitation settings. Repeat if the bag does not look like felt at the end of the cycle.

Tips and Warnings

Count your stitches as you go, especially while crocheting the circle. This way, you will be able to carefully increase (for the base) and stop increasing (for the sides) without any errors.

Loose stitches are good because they lend themselves more effectively to felting techniques.

If the bag is misshapen when you take it out of the washing machine, lay it on a towel on the floor and pin it to the towel so that it is in the shape you desire. Then let it dry.

Do not put your bag in the dryer.
